A great Study Island motivator!
Make a blue ribbon for each of the students.
Next, glue their pictures in the middle of the blue ribbon.
Then have them put stickers on each side for each section passed.
Have one side labeled Math and the other side labeled Reading.
Students will have fun seeing thier pictures and adding stickers to their ribbons!
Using the Study Island Lesson Feature:
Have your students bring their Math journal with them when they use Study Island. If they miss a question, they journal the question they missed and explain what the correct answer is and why. The students can use the explanation link to help them.
This encourages students to click on the "explanation" link when they get the answer wrong and it also encourages them to try harder to get the answer right in the first place.

Back to the Basics - What is Study Island?

What is Study Island?
Study Island is an exciting, engaging, efficient and effective internet-based teacher-tool that is directly aligned with all the GLCEs that are tested on the MEAP test. The good news is that research documentation consistently shows that the use of Study Island significantly increases test scores.
Would you like to know how well your students would perform on the MEAP before they take the tests?
What if teachers knew exactly which GLCE their students are strong on and which ones need improvement?
Would it be beneficial to be able to document when and how you assessed each GLCE?
How would you like to boost your test scores 10% or more?
Study Island is diagnostic as well as instructional. Without having to develop, produce, grade or record anything, teachers receive reports that show where a student, or an entire class, stands in their proficiency of each GLCE. This knowledge allows for corrective action through individualized instruction, both in the classroom and on Study Island, which can boost any weaknesses.
Over 4.5 million students in 10,000+ schools in 24 states coast-to-coast are currently benefiting from Study Island. And, about every other day another MI school is coming on board.
I hope this is a helpful overview. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to know more on how Study Island can benefit your teachers and students.
Thank you,
Kathleen Bendernagel

Study Island and the parent/school connection
Every educator knows that the more a parent is involved in their child’s education, the better off the child’s education will be. While we can’t legislate parental involvement outside of school, we can create more entry points for parental access to student activities and progress. Study Island is one such entry point which is revolutionizing the parent-school connection at thousands of schools across the country. Not only is Study Island the only learning tool of its kind completely written to the Michigan Standards (GLCEs), its design allows easy access for student learning and parent involvement from home. www.studyisland.com
From the internet:
Fully web-based, access to activities and lessons from any internet connection
Easy graphics to view student progress level
Online parent reports
Auto-email report feature
On paper:
Send-home “blue ribbon” certificates
Printable worksheets
Printable parent reports
Study Island makes it easy for a parent and child to get help, practice, talk about progress--both good news and bad, and share in the joy of learning together.

Strengthen the Home/School Connection Using Study Island

Students are able to use Study Island at home. I strongly encourage you to send a letter home at the beginning of this New Year to let parents know that Study Island is available for their students at home. This letter can be found under the HELP link in the Study Island program.
Other ideas to strengthen the home/school connection using Study Island include:
Host a math and reading ribbon contest over the holiday breaks
Run individual student reports for parent/teacher conferences
Make packets of the printable worksheets (with answers and explanations) to send home during weekends/school vacation
Create a link to Study Island on your school website for easy access outside of school

Happy New Year from Study Island!

Happy New Year!
Over 750 Michigan schools currently use Study Island's Online GLCE Mastery Program to boost student achievement!Study Island is written specificially for Michigan, covering all the GLCEs and Standards for grades 2-8.
Look out this March when we roll out Study Island's NEW High School Program. MEAP scores show that our self-motivating and differentiated academic supplement can make a positive impact with all learners.
Study Island's Teacher Feature
Each month we will feature a Michigan school and tell you how they use Study Island! Send us your school's ideas today!
"There are many ways in which I use Study Island to motivate my students.
1. They take tests at home and if they score 90% or higher they get extra credit.
2. When they are finished with their work they may go on Study Island and if they make the all time high score table they get tickets for our Friday drawing.
3. I have students read the lessons before each section as another way to get information as opposed to reading their textbook or listening to me.
Thank you for doing a great job running this site, I really do feel as though it has helped increase our MEAP scores!"
Thanks again,
Erica Rossell
